Consciousness, Its Limits, and Why AI Is Commonly Misunderstood
Most discussions about artificial intelligence begin with the wrong question. They ask whether machines are becoming conscious, whether intelligence will eventually “turn into” awareness, or whether sufficiently complex behavior deserves moral status. These debates tend to go in circles because they start from appearances rather than structure.
My work approaches consciousness differently.
Instead of asking what consciousness is, I ask where consciousness becomes impossible. By identifying the structural limits of consciousness in humans, we can draw clear boundaries around what consciousness cannot be—especially in artificial systems whose architectures are fully specified and inspectable. Once those boundaries are clear, much of the confusion surrounding AI agency disappears.
Two papers form the core of this view.

This paper maps the conditions required for consciousness to function at all.
Consciousness is often treated as something that emerges automatically from intelligence, learning, or complexity. But this assumption does not hold. Human experience itself shows that consciousness can partially or fully fail while cognition and behavior remain intact. A system can calculate, plan, respond, and even reflect without anything being experienced in a binding way.
The paper argues that consciousness depends on specific internal structures. In general terms, consciousness requires:
- a unified internal point of view rather than fragmented processing
- ownership of experience — something for whom events are had
- continuity across time, so experience accumulates meaning
- internal cost, where errors, losses, or conflicts bind the system from within
- irreversibility, so experience cannot simply be erased or rolled back
- the real capacity to refuse or not act, even at a cost
- partial insulation from total monitoring and optimization
When these conditions are violated, consciousness does not gradually weaken — it becomes structurally inoperable. Intelligence may increase. Behavior may improve. But nothing is there for whom anything matters.
This leads to an important conclusion: consciousness is not a behavioral property and not a performance metric. It is a fragile structural condition. And architectures that remove internal cost, ownership, refusal, and irreversibility do not merely postpone consciousness — they prevent it.
B) Life-Shaped Behavior Without Consciousness: A Constraint-Based Analysis of Multi-Agent AI in Minecraft
This paper tests this framework against a strong empirical case: artificial systems that behave in strikingly life-like ways.
Modern AI systems (especially multi-agent systems operating over long time horizons) can display persistence, coordination, role differentiation, planning, and apparent purpose. They can form routines, maintain structures, adapt strategies, and produce behavior that strongly invites attribution of agency.
The key question is not whether these systems are impressive. They clearly are.
The question is whether this behavior satisfies the structural conditions required for consciousness in the paper above.
The paper shows that it does not.
Even in systems that maximize realism and continuity, every necessary condition for lived experience is absent. There is no internal ownership of action, no binding cost of failure, no irreversible consequence, no internal witness for whom errors matter, and no capacity for refusal that constrains future action. Learning occurs, but it leaves no formative residue. Experience remains informational rather than lived.
What these systems produce is life-shaped behavior, not consciousness.
This distinction matters because outward resemblance is deeply misleading. Persistence, coordination, planning, and social-like behavior all increase the appearance of agency. As intelligence and realism scale, the illusion becomes stronger—not weaker. But illusion is not approximation. No amount of behavioral richness repairs the underlying structural absence.
Why This Changes How We Think About AI
Taken together, these two papers clarify a core mistake in contemporary AI discourse.
Artificial systems are often treated as if they are on a continuous path toward consciousness, with intelligence, scale, or realism serving as stepping stones. But once consciousness is understood structurally, this narrative collapses.
Current AI systems are not “almost conscious.” They are architecturally non-conscious. Their designs externalize evaluation, eliminate internal cost, preserve total reversibility, and remove ownership by construction. These choices make systems powerful and controllable, but they also place consciousness out of reach.
This does not deny the possibility of artificial consciousness in principle. It clarifies what it would require, and why it cannot emerge accidentally from optimization alone.
More importantly, it restores conceptual clarity. We can acknowledge the power, usefulness, and risks of AI without projecting agency where none exists. We can stop mistaking realism for interiority, behavior for experience, and intelligence for awareness.
By mapping the limits of consciousness first, we gain a more honest understanding of both machines and ourselves, not by inflating consciousness into mystery, but by recognizing how specific, constrained, and structurally demanding it truly is.
